Rainbow Foundation was formed in July 2016, to support the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) community in Sunderland. In recent years the organisation has grown to provide services for LGBT+ people across the North East of England, with services operating from their base at the Pride Media Centre in Gateshead, as well as within communities across the region.
The organisation has had a huge impact over the last four years. Since we launched in 2016, we’ve gone on to work with 14 directors, some of whom are sadly no longer with us. We’ve supported over 35 people to get involved in volunteering. We’ve received 7 award nominations, locally, regionally and nationally, and most importantly we’ve raised over £40,000 to support LGBT+ people in the region.
The work continues, because there’s inequalities that still exist for LGBT+ people, and I’m really proud to lead an organisation that works to challenge those inequalities and the barriers to LGBT+ people living thriving lives.Ryan Houston, Founder & Chairman
The organisation is voluntary-led and relies on the generous donations made by individuals as well as funding provided by grant providers for key project work.
Board of Directors
We are currently looking for new individuals to join the Board of Directors. We currently have two roles available:
Director of Services – You’ll work closely with the senior leadership team to develop project plans, and look to establish a wide-range of services for LGBT+ people. You’ll develop ideas, and then put them into practice, while supporting the other Directors to ensure that services are fit for purpose and are helping LGBT+ people to live thriving lives.
Director of Inclusion – You’ll help to ensure that our services, events and projects are inclusive of LGBT+ people, and you’ll help guide the organisation to progress in its efforts of inclusion. You’ll work with our volunteers and delivery team to asses who we are supporting and how we can continue to expand our services across the region.
Both of the roles that are available can be flexible, and require a minimum commitment of around 3 hours per month. The Board of Directors sit six times per year, and Directors are asked to attend these meetings, which are currently being delivered remotely. Directors are required to be members of the organisation, which is available for a £1 fee.
Application period closes Friday 31st of July
